Damon. It’s revealed that the reason Stefan had the necklace was because of
Klaus’s compulsion.

knocking down a powerline. This prevented Grayson from surprising his children
to a trip to their lake house that weekend.

2 hours before the accident Miranda had left an urgent
message to Liz to bust Jeremey from smoking pot because she and Jenna caught
him smoking Marijuana in his room. Jeremey says she was just trying to scare
him by reporting him to the police.
Elena meets Damon for the first time after a fight
with her boyfriend matt over their future together at a bonfire. She was
waiting for her parents to pick her up after ditching family Night, but Damon
compels her to forget they met. He says this was because he didn’t want people
to know he’s in town yet. They took Wickery bridge that night instead of the
direct old miller road due to the storm after picking up Elena from the
bonfire. Liz suspected Damon or something Supernatural had caused the accident
since the storm saw no brake marks on the road.
The car
drives off the bridge and into the water going home after picking up Elena
Stefan was
nearby when the car had drove off the bridge and ran to go rescue them Grayson
told Stefan to save Elena first. He left her on the shore but when he went back
Miranda and Grayson already died. It’s unknown for sure on how Damon and Stefan
were both there that night considering that Damon didn’t want Stefan to know
just yet mainly because he wanted to give him time to know Elena before he did
interfere and didn’t want to scare her with the knowledge that she was talking
to a vampire. When Damon first met Elena There were no signs that Damon’s
Humanity was off but he could’ve been pretending.
Summer 2009
After Stefan had saved her she and Jeremey lived with Liz and Caroline for a time after the accident while Jenna was preparing to be their legal guardian.
Stefan and Damon were both in town the night of the
accident Elena had already met Damon, but it was Stefan from an unknown
location who had saved her. Stefan was
shocked of her resemblance to the brother’s lost love Katherine he observed
Elena that summer to make sure it wasn’t Katherine wearing a disguise after
realizing she has a different personality then Katherine’s, he wanted to get to
know her. It’s possible that Damon was doing the same thing by Stalking her
with a crow.
August
2009
Katherine was living in Emerald coast Florida under
the name Kathy she compelled Mason Lockwood’s best friend to pick a fight with
him to trigger his werewolf curse. Right after Mason began asking questions
about the sun and the moon curse, she had Mason in mind as an ingredient of the
ritual to break it. According to Stevie Mason was hanging out with a werewolf
pack who did not approve of his relationship with Kathy and sensed she was a
vampire.
