2018 to 5 billion years
a normal star is astronomical object that consists of a luminous spheroid of plasma held together by its own gravity our sun is also a star but in this case its not just a normal star like all the others in the sky the sun is what we call a giant star which is mainly a star that gives off a larger radius and luminosity then an average star.
this is called a red giant what i said before about the giant star this is what it looks like. and if your confused that i called the sun a giant star i can explain with lots of evidence that it's actually real. the outer atmosphere of the red giant is inflated and tenuous which makes it's radius a lot larger making its surface temperature up to 5000 degrees maximum. the most common stars are red giants called RGB the red giant branch that still fuses hydrogen into helium in a shell surrounding it's helium core.
this is when i explain that the sun is a giant star. basically what happens the sun itself is in the middle of its life cycle over 4.6 billion years ago the sun was born many scientists have learned that the sun and the entire solar system was formed by a giant rotating cloud of gas and dust known as the solar nebula but when that nebula collapsed because of its gravity it spun faster and flattens like a disk. in over 4 or 5 billion years from now the sun will die out. once when the sun enters and swells up in it's red giant phase being as big as the earth's orbit will explode and possibly swallow the earth.
this is what the sun would look like once it stops shining. the sun will eventually burn out since it's birth 4.6 billion years ago the sun will use up half of its hydrogen fuel which would cause the sun rendered dead the sun's hydrogen now still has enough to last for a bout 5 billion years from now.
once the sun burns off it's last drop of fuel and enters the red giant phase being as big as the earth's orbit this is what the earth would look like once the red giant swallows the earth. and possibly could cause human extinction we wouldn't know if this would come to pass since all of us will be gone by then and would not even be alive to see our earth burn.
this is what the sun would look like in the aftermath of its life span.
without the sunlight the earth would become cold it's surface temperature now is about 57 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of it's first week without any sun the average temperature will drop to it's below freezing point.
the answer lies in Antarctica if the earth goes underwater the melted ice in Antarctica could cause the sea level to high about 58 meters if you calculate all the numbers correctly you will get a total of 263 Antarctica holds that much water due to it's ice if all of this melts there is a chance that the earth would slowly rise up it's sea level and drown.
